Who is permitted to check out library materials?
In order to borrow items from the Parlow Library you will need to apply for a library card. All employees of Harbor UCLA Medical Center and LABioMed including medical students, interns, residents, fellows, faculty, nurses, and allied health professionals are qualified to receive a Parlow Library card.

How long can I keep the items I have checked out?
- Bound journals - may be checked out overnight
- Unbound journals - do not circulate
- Reserve books - circulate for 3 days
- 7 day books - circulate for 7 days
- General collection and Patient Education books - circulate for 14 days
- Reference books - do not circulate
- Audiovisual materials - circulate for 3 days
- Audiovisual equipment - may be checked out but must be returned the same day. An ID badge must be left with the library staff and will be returned to the borrower when the equipment is returned. Audiovisual equipment loans may be scheduled by phone at ext 2372.
What if I need to keep the items I have checked out beyond their due date?
Most library materials may be renewed providing there is no hold on the item. A maximum of two renewals is permitted on most items. Journals and reserve books may not be renewed. Visit or call the library at ext 2372 and provide your library card number and the bar code number of the borrowed item in order to renew your loan.
Where are the journals shelved?
The most recent journal issues are shelved on the first floor of the Parlow Library behind the Reference collection. Older journal issues are bound and shelved alphabetically by journal title on the second floor of the Parlow Library.
Where are the books shelved?
The Reference and Reserve collections are shelved on the first floor of the Parlow Library. The General collection and Patient Education collection are shelved on the second floor of the Parlow Library.
Who should I contact for library orientation?
Library orientation is available by appointment with the Reference Department at ext 2372.
Who is allowed to use the computers in the Parlow Library?
The computers in the Parlow Library are reserved for Harbor UCLA Medical Center and LABioMed employees only for research purposes. Accessing gambling and adult-only sites is strictly prohibited.
Can I use the computers to type Word, Excel or PowerPoint documents?
Harbor UCLA Medical Center and LABioMed employees are free to use the computers in the Audiovisual Room which are equipped with word processing software and disc/CD Rom drives.
Where are the Nursing Instruction computers and how do I use them?
The Nursing Instruction computers are in the Audiovisual Room. There is an instruction guide for the Nursing CE programs located next to the computers. Please contact the Reference Department with any questions you have regarding the Nursing Instruction computers.
How do I submit a request for an article or book not held at the Parlow Library?
The Reference Department will process requests for articles and books not held at the Parlow Library for Harbor UCLA Medical Center and LABioMed staff. Please fill out the Article Request Form or Book Request Form located on the Circulation desk and leave your request in the adjoining brown box. Please specify how you prefer to receive your request. You may also phone in your request to the Reference Department at ext 2372 or email at libref@labiomed.org.
Can I borrow a laptop computer or overhead projector from the Parlow Library?
The laptop computer and projector are available to Harbor UCLA Medical Center and LABioMed staff by appointment with the Reference Department at ext 2372 or libref@labiomed.org. This equipment is for use in the Parlow Library conference rooms and the main Hospital building only. An ID badge must be left with the library staff and will be returned to the borrower when the equipment is returned.
Who should I contact to reserve a library conference room?
The library conference rooms are scheduled through the Medical Director's office at ext 2911.
